Susan Berson Rejoins Mintz Levin to Head Washington, D.C. Office

Washington, D.C. – Susan Berson, a senior healthcare industry attorney who most recently served as General Counsel for the Public and Senior Markets Group of UnitedHealth Group, one of the nation's largest insurers, has rejoined Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, PC as Managing Member of the firm's Washington, D.C. office. Ms. Berson, who joined UnitedHealth, a long-time client of the firm, in 2006, previously spent 6 years with Mintz Levin as a Member and Chair of the Health Care Section.

Ms. Berson joined UnitedHealth Group, Ovations as Senior Deputy General Counsel, providing legal oversight of United's Medicare enterprise-wide pharmacy benefit activities and shortly thereafter assumed the additional role of General Counsel for AmeriChoice, a provider of managed care solutions for beneficiaries of government health care programs. She was then appointed to General Counsel for United's Public and Senior Markets Group where her responsibilities included the oversight and management of the legal and regulatory functions for both Ovations and AmeriChoice and continued in her role as the chief pharmacy counsel for all of United.
During her tenure at UnitedHealth Group, Ms. Berson successfully established a strategically-organized legal and regulatory affairs team that included a first-rate litigation and risk management team, a robust audit management team and a national compliance team, each dedicated to address the many needs of United’s government-sponsored programs.
Prior to her positions at Mintz Levin and UnitedHealth Group, Ms. Berson was a partner and chair of the health care practice group of Torys, New York (formerly Haythe & Curley).
Through the years, Ms. Berson's practice has focused on the structuring and negotiating of various health care transactions, affiliations, mergers, acquisitions and contracts for such diverse clients as health care delivery networks, managed care organizations, vendors, suppliers, practice management companies, venture capital groups and investment banks, often focusing on state and federal regulatory issues. Ms. Berson also has a thorough understanding of a range of pharmaceutical industry issues including negotiating and structuring relationships with PBMs, pharmacies and manufacturers.
Ms. Berson is a graduate of Columbia University School of Law, where she was a Harlan Fisk Stone Scholar.
