Six-Year Old Program has Delivered Almost 2,000 Backpacks to Children Living in Area Shelters

Boston, MA –  Employees from across the offices of Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C. have contributed to the firm's backpack project enabling firm organizers to send 382 backpacks to school-age children and mothers living in shelters.

The program, which was started by Jennifer Nelson, a secretary in the firm's Boston office, asks employees to either "adopt" a child, in which the person is supplied with the age and gender of the child, and fill a backpack with necessary school supplies, or to make a cash contribution and organizers purchase and fill a backpack with needed items.  These items include basics like markers, pencils, glue, gym shoes and often times, a new outfit for the first day of school.  Many of the recipients of the backpacks, which includes children and their mothers, are homeless as a result of domestic violence.  All of the recipients reside in Boston-area shelters.

"Over the years we have heard from the shelters how much something as small as a new backpack, something so many of us take for granted, can mean to a child whose life has been disrupted by homelessness," said Ben Hincks, a Member in the firm's Litigation Practice and Director of Community Service for the firm.  "This program has become an annual fall undertaking that has grown from its roots in Boston, to now include contributions from across our 8 offices."

To date, the firm has collected and donated 1,855 backpacks to nine women's shelters in the Boston area.
