Firm Recognized for Post Hurricane Katrina Pro Bono Efforts
Boston, MA - June 5, 2007 - Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C. is being recognized by the Mississippi Center for Justice for the firm's exceptional commitment to the region's legal needs in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The Mississippi on the Potomac Reception will take place on June 7, 2007 in Washington, D.C.
Over the course of 2006, nearly fifty Mintz Levin attorneys committed themselves to numerous cases and projects aimed at helping to alleviate the continuing post-Hurricane Katrina legal crisis. The firm dedicated nearly 2,500 attorney hours to projects ranging from representing the Gulf Coast Boys and Girls' Club and Moore Community House of Biloxi in their FEMA appeals as they sought to rebuild, to drafting and distributing to the country's Governors and Emergency Management agencies what will serve in future catastrophes as a resource guide of easily accessible and quickly actionable disaster laws. Mintz Levin's attorneys lined up to put their expertise and resources to work as part of the firm's concerted efforts -- ranging from representing individuals to advocating large-scale systemic change -- to help the Gulf Coast communities and individuals who remain in need.
The Mississippi Center for Justice (MCJ), which opened its doors in June 2003, is a non-profit public interest law firm, working to advance racial and economic justice statewide. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the organization has taken a lead role in coordinating national and regional efforts to respond to the daunting legal needs of low-income survivors, particularly in the area of housing. In late 2005, MCJ opened a Katrina Recovery Office in Biloxi to focus on rebuilding more just and inclusive communities on the Mississippi coast.
Mintz Levin attorneys Martha Koster, Noah Shaw, Elissa Flynn-Poppey, Hemanth Gundavaram, and Helen Gerostathos Guyton (all practicing in the Litigation section), and Scott Moskol (Bankruptcy) have led the firm's response to the area's legal crisis, working hand in hand with the Mississippi Center for Justice.
