Pro Bono Program Provides Medical and Legal Needs of Families

Boston, MA -  Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, PC today announced that it has been recognized by the Boston Medical Center's Family Advocacy Program for its leadership in representing families and children referred by Boston Medical Center physicians.  The award will be presented at the Family Advocacy Program's fourth annual national conference on November 5, 2004, in Boston, Massachusetts.  Renee Landers, Esq., Associate Professor of Law at Suffolk University and recent President of the Boston Bar Association, will be the keynote speaker.  Richard Mintz will accept the award on behalf of Mintz Levin.

We are honored to be recognized by the Family Advocacy Program, and to be working with such a forward-thinking program," said John K. Markey, a member in the firm's Litigation practice and Chair of the firm's Pro Bono Committee.  "Boston Medical Center is to be commended for recognizing the many outside factors that can contribute to the health and well-being of children, such as a child living in a safe and healthy home."

The Family Advocacy Program (FAP) is a medical-legal collaborative designed to improve the health and welfare of low-income families with children. Since the program's inception in 1993, FAP services have helped over 4,000 families, while assisting in the establishment of 25 similar programs across the country. Through its partnership with the FAP, Mintz Levin has assisted clients with legal issues surrounding housing, immigration, disability and social security benefits and education.

Since June 2001, Mintz Levin has supported the work of the FAP through a pro bono arrangement.  Mintz Levin provides direct legal assistance to families by accepting referrals for the more complex and time-consuming cases, thus enabling the FAP's caseload capacity to increase.

As an American Bar Association Pro Bono Challenge signatory, Mintz Levin is committed to dedicating at least three percent of total hours billed annually to handling pro bono cases.
